Koktebel Jazz Festival

Since 2003 Koktebel Jazz Festival has rapidly grown into the largest annual music event in Ukraine. Koktebel is a small resort town (2.500 people) on the Black seashore, the village that had a very strong influence on Russian culture in XX century. The KJF 2011 is scheduled for mid-September, with main "NU Jazzz" stage on the festival beach territory and a contemporary jazz and improvised music stage in Max Voloshyn museum garden. The festival audience consists of mostly large Ukrainian cities residents (65%), tourists from Russia and Belarus (15%), local Crimean habitants (20%). Average day ticket costs around 12 USD. Each year 150 - 200 musicians participate in the official line-up.

Each year in the middle of September Koktebel Jazz inspires some 20.000 people to rush off their comfortable homes to share four days of sleepless joy. What do you get during each Koktebel Jazz Festival each September: - atmosphere of harmony and unity; - unique live music and performances during four days of Koktebel Jazz on two main venues and on the streets; - inspiring natural surroundings of south-east Crimean Black Sea coast.

During its 10-years history the festival has proved to be more than festival of jazz music... “One of our main aim – is to change perception of jazz as the “old-fashioned” and “out of date” music. Koktebel Jazz today is a whole movement of people, who change the world into a better place. In the world of common clichés and standard forms our inspired improvised music attracts more and more people, who seek to balance overall conformity” Companion, №37, 2007

Jazz for us is rather a symbol of authentic creative and personal freedom. It challenges the basics of traditional rationality, inspiring to push the boundaries of day-to-day perception and transgress the limitations of ego in order to achieve a state of unity with one's true Self.

Among earlier Koktebel Jazz Festival international participants Stanley Clark band, Billy Cobham Culture Mix Project, Archie Shepp Quartet, Oi Va Voi, Courtney Pine band, Karl Frierson project, Shibusashirazu Orchestra, Red Snapper, Us3, De Phazz, Bregovichi, Goran Bregovic and his Wedding and Funeral Orchestra.

Koktebel Jazz 2013 starts on September 12 2013, in the end of the high season. The dates of 11-th fest are September 12 – 15 September 2013.
