The Monument to Scuttled Ships draws the eye like nothing else in Sevastopol. Located in the very heart of the city on Primorsky boulevard, the symbol of Sevastopol was build off shore on an artificial rock. It is a column topped by two-headed eagle with a laurel wreath in its beak.

A spectacular work of sculptor Adamson remains us of the times that had made Sevastopol a legend. The world-known monument was erected in 1905, by 50-th anniversary of the first defense of Sevastopol. The inscription on the pedestal says “In the Memory of the Ships Scuttled to Block the Entrance in the Roads in the Year 1854-1855”.

The ships were scuttled in the times of the Crimean war and the first Sevastopol defense that took place in the city in the middle of XIX century. The tragic war destroyed Sevastopol to ruins and had turned it into the symbol of unfading glory and courage.

The Monument to Scuttled Ships symbolizes Sevastopol which bows down before the memory of its defenders. The Monument of the Scuttled Ships is portrayed in the coat of arms of the city.
