Attractions in Sevastopol - Bays of Sevastopol

Bays of Sevastopol are distinctive attraction of the city.  Splendidly protected from stormy weather and enemy aggression, Sevastopol bays became a determinative factor to build a port and a base of the Russian fleet in this area.

Alexander Suvorov, an outstanding Russian military commander of XVIII century, was the first who sized up the true value of Sevastopol bays. He pointed out the potential of Sevastopol bays for deployment of Russian fleet on the Black Sea.  The monument to Suvorov is located on Lenin street on the square named after him.

Nowadays Bays of Sevastopol host Ukrainian Navy and Russian Black Sea Fleet.  There is a naval and civilian port, numerous marinas, cargo ship /passenger terminals; some of the inlets are used for shipbuilding and for recreational purposes.

Sevastopol Bay (Harbour of Sevastopol) is the longest in the city. Consisted of more than 20 smaller bays and inlets (Southern Bay, Korabelnaya Bay, Kilen Bay, Quarantine Bay, Streletskaya  Bay and others), Sevastopol Bay divides the city into Southern and Northern parts. Harbor of Sevastopol is considered to be one of the most convenient harbors of the world. It is a largest natural harbor of the Crimea and Eastern Europe, its length is about 7,5 km (4,6 miles).

The second large bay in Sevastopol is Southern Bay. Stretching for about 3 km (1,8 miles) south from Sevastopol Bay, it divides Southern part of the city into Central and Korabelnaya (Ship) parts. It is a deepest and quietest bay of the city, a berth for naval and civilian ships. Sea Port of Sevastopol and passenger terminal are located in Southern Bay as well as shipyards and floating workshops.

A peculiar feature of the city is ferry-boat public transportation. There is no bridges crossing over the bays of Sevastopol that’s why to get from the Northern to the Southern part of the city you will need to drive around it or to take a ferryboat. Taking a ferry boat is a good opportunity to admire panoramic views of the city and the fleet.
